Terminology

If you’re reading an article and don’t know what something means, check here. Widely used stats, such as Win Shares, won’t be posted here. Things that aren’t as well known will be posted here though.

POE – Points Over Expectation. This is how many points a player accounted for (Offense and Defense) per game compared to what an average player would’ve done given the same amount and types of possessions.

CPOE – Created Points Over Expectation. The offensive component of POE. This is how many points a player scored compared to what an average player would’ve scored given the same amount and type of shots.

DPOE – Defensive Points Over Expectation. The Defensive component of POE. This is how many points a player prevented compared to what an average player would’ve done given the same amount and type of defensive possessions.

PIPM – Player Impact Plus-Minus. An estimate of how much value a player adds to their team. IS broken down into Offensive and Defensive categories.

BPR – Bayesian Performance Rating. Stat created by Evan Miya for Evanmiya.com. Another stat that attempts to measure the value a player adds to their team. Also used to measure which teams are better than others. Broken down into offensive and defensive components.

Gravity – How much defense a player attracts. Often used in relation to spacing/shooting. A player with high gravity keeps defenders close to them, meaning their defender won’t help elsewhere.
