About Aztec Breakdown

I started Aztec Breakdown in 2017 for a very simple reason, I wanted more coverage of the team I enjoyed watching.

At the time there was very little coverage, and not nearly enough to satiate me. At a certain point I realized I would have to be the one to provide the coverage.

The longer I’ve been doing this though, the more I realize how bad sports coverage can be in general. The people that cover sports nationally can’t focus on a single team and so they miss so much detail and context and their coverage is worse because of it. They have to stick to tired narratives and if they try to break out of them they look like fools. Local guys have the ability to focus on one team and know all the ins and outs, but even then I often find that they hold opinions that are heavily influenced by the national conversation. They usually don’t have the passion to really care about what is going on. There are some analysts, both on a local and national level, that I like. They are few and far between though.

The goal of Aztec Breakdown is to cover the sport on a deeper level. Whether it’s reviewing game tape, or studying high level analytics, I hope to give fans coverage of the team they love that they can’t find anywhere else. When it’s all said and done, I hope that everyone, myself included, can learn something new about this wonderful sport we call basketball, and enjoy the team on a deeper level.
